Community-Driven Urban Green Space
Project

Addison Road Community Centre is a historic space in the heart of Marrickville, NSW. Once a swampy transitional bushland between Turpentine-Ironbark trees and the Gumbramorra Swamp, the area provided wetland tucker for the Cadigal people in this area which went by the name of Bulanaming. After a period of private white ownership between 1799 and 1913, and the establishment of an army barracks from World War I until the Vietnam War, the site was handed to the community for management after a long public campaign, finally becoming a place of culture for people of all backgrounds in 1975.
Between the historical buildings lie various open spaces and green rooms, some of them planted with mature trees or smaller shrubs, others bare. Seizing the opportunity provided by this beautiful space and an open, engaged community, we are working with the Addison Road Community Organisation to turn the grounds into an inspirational urban green space for quiet reflection, outdoor cultural encounters, or gardening sessions to support the well-trodden land. The approach is community-centric in planning and management, allowing people to engage on a deeper level.
